ZIP Code Strategy for BPO Coverage: How Wide Should You Go?

Your ZIP list decides how many broadcasts you see and how much you keep. Here is how to size it.

Your coverage area is a trade-off. More ZIP codes mean more broadcasts; too many mean long drives that eat your fee. Here is how to find the balance.

Start with drive time, not distance

Map how far you can drive in 20, 30 and 45 minutes from home and your usual routes. Traffic and geography matter more than miles.

Build three rings

  • Core: ZIPs within 20 minutes. Accept most orders here.
  • Extended: 20 to 35 minutes. Accept only at a higher fee.
  • Occasional: further out, only for high fees or when already driving there.

Keep vendors and your tool in sync

Vendors broadcast based on the coverage you gave them. Your automation filters based on its own ZIP list. If the two do not match, you either miss orders or accept ones you did not want.

Watch the data

After a month, look at where orders actually came from and which ZIPs produced wins. Drop ZIPs that bring nothing but drive time; add neighbours of your busiest ones.

Avoid the statewide trap

Registering for a whole state feels like it maximises volume. In practice you get broadcasts you cannot service, and automation may accept them. Be realistic.
